What the images do and don't claim
- — Prices are US city averages from the BLS Average Price Data programme, not wholesale quotes. They show direction and magnitude, not what a kitchen pays.
- — The trailing change on each card is measured across the last twelve published months. BLS gaps are dropped rather than interpolated, so the card prints the month it is measured against instead of asserting a calendar year.
- — The index is Marji's construction on BLS prices. BLS publishes the prices; it does not publish this index. The methodology page carries the BLS series identifier and basket weight for all 10 weighted categories.
- — Images regenerate from live data, so an embedded chart updates itself. If you need a value pinned to a month, cite that month's archive page instead — /food-cost-index/2026-07 is the latest. Those URLs are permanent.
